Struts, Fuel lines and Subassembly

Recommended Posts

When sub assembly was announced I was almost giddy, finally I could make that standard launcher family to fit all my launching needs and just slam them under loads and get on with it.

Unfortunately it just doesn't really work for this. When loading launchers from sub assembly I always have quite a load of struts and fuel lines not connecting. After launching they stay this way, so every time I use a booster I still have to done some work to get it ready.

Is there a solution for this? Maybe easy editing of a cfg file or something?

After loading same booster from sub assembly;

I've run into this issue with some of my subassemblies. However, I've found that "it" decides when it wants to work so it doesn't always work every time. One thing that you might want to try is saving it as a ship first. Then close the game. Then reopen the game and quickly drag the desired part into the subassembly area. Then close the game and reopen it again. See if it loads properly.

Oddly enough, I can get the 400+ part count things to work just fine every time, but the 100 or less part count ships don't know how to work with the subassemblies. Also, you'll want to check the orientation of the parts, it looks like your fuel lines are rotated 90 degrees on the Y axis. As for the struts, I'm not sure.

Honestly, this problem hasn't happened much for me. I'm not saying it hasn't, because I believe it has, but I make strenuous use of the subassemblies for different lifter bodies, and haven't had much difficulty. The main problem I sometimes face is the setup to where I must secure the payloads.

I seem to recall that if you Alt+Click to copy the section you want to save as subassembly in order to drop it into the subassembly dropzone, most or all of the struts or fuel lines won't reconnect when you try to use it later. If you instead simply pick it up normally and drop it into the subassembly section, it seems to work more reliably.

This has happened to me a lot, but now if I am making a subassembly I just leave struts and fuel lines off the final version. I realize that this might not work on the more complex designs, but the more basic designs this shouldn't be an issue.

This solves it for me, thanks a lot!! :)

The only time i have noticed a problem with it is if i try to attach a sub assembly that has struts connecting to an upper structure that are no longer there such as a shorter/smaller payload.

The old sub assembly mod had this same problem. I think it was solely because of struts/lines appearing in the CRAFT file before the part that they were connected "to". If you are building a craft, you probably put on struts and fuel lines last so they are fine. But if you copy a sub tree, it probably sorts the parts by parent, thus potentially breaking struts and fuel lines.
