Biome Mapping / Keeping track of where you've been.

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I recently bought KSP and am enjoying it a lot. However with the hunt for science from different biomes I have found that it is very hard to see what you have and haven't collected. I know that there is a list for certain biomes and planets and the kind of encounter in the science archive but it's not really that helpfull to find locations you haven't been at yet.

What I'd really like to have is a biome mapping onto the surface of celestial body, be it in map mode or flight mode so I can see where to land. It would be awesome if those biome borders were maybe detectable from space with a camera for science or something like it. And then having a checklist of possible things to do in that biome. It doesn't have to be automated but some improved tool to keep track of what you've done is needed imo.

Even though I can do an EVA in orbit to check the biome, then go the science archive and check for the biome and then decelerate very fast to land exactly below where I did the EVA is a functional hack, I'd rather have a map with crosses or something where I've been already.

I have found the mapping mod and even though I like the idea very much I don't think that should be separate (optional) from (for) the game.

Thanks for reading and what do you think?

I want to launch a sat into orbit around a body and instead of getting science from the sat it just enables me to toggle "Biome View" on the chart screen.

Then I can land. Plant a flag and know I've been there.

KSP has introduced Biomes. Mapping these biomes should be from stock parts too.

Well sure, but the suggestion is that it should be possible to switch the map view to that mode, so I can see where I am landing.

I definitely agree that if the stock game has biomes, it should also provide map of them as soon as I scan the terrain.

An utility part that can scan the biomes of a planet will be really cool!

Instead of random landing, u can send a probe with a telescope that after deploy and a couple completed and unmodified orbit will allow, selecting the telescope, to show the biomes map. And u need to keep that satellite into the orbit to access the data.

If u want a more indept one, u can make that u can see only the portion of the map that your satellite can see at the moment and also consulting all the data already collected in that biome.

And as the monetary system is incoming, a "Mapping Planet Mission" is totally profitable.

yes i agree that the list of biomes needs improving. on thing that would definitely help is in the science list under each planet it list's each of the biomes for that world. also what would help is a biome veaw in the map mode. it turns off the surface veaw on the objects and high lights the edges if each area on the planet/moon. with a further option to colour code the areas by science done there.

i don't think Forcing someone to scan the planet is a good idea or not after all the moon and other planets in our soler sytem have already been devided into areas of intrest already and we ant even been to most of them yet.

In career mode - i think you need to go out and find the Biomes.... why should we be told about them from the get go. However a stock part that can be put on a satellite that scans for biomes and anomalies will be a good addition i think.
