Backwards parts?

A lot of the rockets I see in the spacecraft exchange and in various people's contest entries have parts that are fitted backwards, ie. using tailcones as nosecones, inverted triple or quad couplers to fit multiple docking ports, etc, but in the VAB all I seem to be able to do is stack things right side up. How do I turn things around like that?

WASDQE will rotate parts 90 degrees, also you can hold shift while you do this to rotate in small increments.

By small, he means 5 degree increments. Also another fact, angle snap snaps to 15 degree increments. 3 SHIFT+WASDQE rotations equals the equivalent of 1 angle snap and 9 is a 45 degree angle.
