How do I dock my 2 ships that have docks that are in docking range?

Recommended Posts

Title says it. I'm like meters from my target. I have my dock "control from here" and the oher "set target". I right click both and Idk what else to do. I can use mechjeb but I want to turn the ship the right way so ladders align. :I

Meters is a bit too far, you need to make the docking ports almost touch.

Just rotate both ships so the docking port faces the other ship, then apply a little thrust.

Or use navball in Target mode and keep the prograde marker in the target marker till the ships touch.

That should work assuming you have not mounted your docking ports wrong or used different sizes.

Depending on how you have built the ships, you can enable force roll in the docking autopilot and adjust the degrees accordingly. If however, like myself, you find manual docking more satisfying, do like Kasuha said and aim for a contact velocity of about 0.1-0.2 m/s. I think once they are in range they pull toward each other at about 0.2 m/s anyway, so you might notice a slight increase in speed at the very end.

And sometimes once you get within 0.2m, the magnets kick in, and pull the spacecraft towards each other, but they don't quite dock properly. This seems to be because of SAS fighting the magnets, so if you turn it off for a second, it usually fixes the issue

Also, kind of off-topic, if you're using MechJeb, I've found that if you set both ships to fix on their targets using Smart A.S.S. and enable docking autopilot, as you get closer the ships can sometimes start to sway as they constantly compensate to line up.
