from the devnotes today "Chad (C7): Glad to be back to work after the vacation. I’ve been working on a few things as development of 0.24 ramps up. I’ve also been experimenting with Unity 4.3.3, to see if we can upgrade without any issues."

is 4.3.3 64bit? i have no luck lurking the unity forums for info.

All recent versions of Unity can build to a 64-bit system, the issues with 64 bit are based in KSP. Until KSP works correctly with 64 bits, it'll be 32 bit (unless you're on 64-bit Linux). I've been using Unity for around 4 years now so if you have more questions I can probably answer them.

Unity has supported 64bit for quite some time. It is just that squad has issues with getting it to work stable in windows and mac os.

For linux they already have had a 64bit build since version .19 which works well.

Coding an engine from scratch would probably mean halting all KSP development for upwards of a year... and that's a generous estimate. A lot of things currently handled by Unity with minimal tweaking would suddenly need re-coding from scratch. Attempting to replace Unity with a new engine would probably take an equivalent amount of time. Not only would every single dev have to refamiliarise themselves with the engine from scratch, they'd then have to essentially re-code massive portions of the existing KSP code in order to accomplish the same things it already does.

It simply isn't feasible. However, we are getting off-track. Please stay on-topic.

iirc.. the main problem wasn't the x64 support, but the fact that unity can only start one single physics thread.. or something like this.

x64 support would solve memory issues with heavy modded games, but not performance issues with high partcounts.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
