RAPIER explodes

Hi, I'm using FAR and DRE.

I've been trying to make SSTOs but the rapiers always overheat too fast and explode.

Any suggestion on how to avoid this?

Did you remember to add air intakes to your SSTO?

Rapiers get very hot if they burn rocket mode in atmosphere. If you are using the jet mode they should stay nice and cool, but to do this they need a supply of fresh air!

There is a bug with Rapiers and DRE. You can try to use struts to attach the Rapiers to the fuselage. Don't be shy, try 8 to begin with. Because moar struts = better... ;P

BTW, I've read in other post something about placing the engines near to the center of mass to keep them cool, is it like that?

I have the same mods and I've been noticing that. In my case, they have exploded due to high g-forces, try checking on F3 to see the reason. it might help.

Still sounds to me like the engines are running in the wrong mode. Are the flame jets yellow or blue coloured?

In the context menu it says it's working on airbreathing. Also, I see the oxidizer level is not going down, so it is working on the correct mode.

I checked with F3 it says it was destroyed due to high g-forces, but the meter never went more than 2G, so...

Good tip

I checked with a very simple SSTO I got from one of the challenges and works nice. I found some advice there about the problem with DRE. Seems to be working now.

I thought version 4.3 (Jan 11 release) fixed this bug? The work around was to reduce the HeatProduction values (both of them) in the RAPIER file. That's what I did, but I forgot to change them back since the update.

I don't have DRE or FAR, but the stacked RAPIERs on my EGRET SSTO both have wings mounted on them. I had to split the wings up otherwise one engine explodes shortly after going closed cycle. So even in stock, you have to give them heat sinks if you stack them.
