Mountain Climbing

Recommended Posts

kerbal\'s don\'t like climbing, their stumpy legs means that they are not so very good at it. However now thanks to the KSP kerbals can reach the top of mountains without even walking!

This challenges if you choose to accept it, is to land at the highest altitude as you can. Bonus points for stock and coming in from orbit. But planes, VTOL and anything else is allowed.

Below is the leaderboard, if you climb a peak you get to name it. lets find the tallest mountain on kearth!

OP doing the challenge himself first... Awesome.

We really need a do-it-yourself-first policy here in challenges section to prevent people posting troll challenges ;)

Not competing.

Just lithobraked at 850m (was too lazy to land decently 8)) -- and it seems that the nearest peak is even higher.

Just to point out where to search for these mountains:

In the center of pictures below.

Well done Tosh, made it to the top of the leader board. Wonder if anyone else can manage better?

It is quite a sensible policy, but one I haven\'t always managed to confine too. The best requirement is to make sure it\'s a challenge but achievable.

I wonder too. There\'s a peak of 905 meters in that mountain range, but I\'ve just failed to land 12m-long plane on its 5x5m summit))

Well I\'ve landed on a decent peak I think.

Lots of RCS pods and this thing barely made it onto that ridge.

Screwed up trying to land higher on it and the whole damn plane fell apart.

Nice work you\'ve made the highscore, but for how long? Tosh has found a 905m peak. Also do you have a name for the craft and one you\'d like to name the ridge?

Tried to climb a peak in a plane.

Somehow it tripped on a tile border and exploded. It had been running across then fine for ages.

My second attempt was a lot more successful. Yes, the cockpit came off. But the point is, once I add RCS to this thing, I\'m laughing. I\'ll be able to get over little ridges like the one I crashed on.

Updated high scores, Good work RedDwarf and well done Tosh you\'re back in 1st. Wonder if it\'s possible to break the 900m mark?

PS: Guys do you crafts have names?

PPS: Also if you can post a shot of the mountain\'s rough location that would be handy, then it might be possible to map these mountains.

All the mountains I\'m attempting to land are exactly in the center of this picture (lung-shaped dark spot in the middle of white):

It\'s difficult to point out an exact location \'cause game engine smooths the relief and each specific peak shows up only when a plane\'s at 1 000 meters from it.

Big Wing in boost mode climbing for a suborbital flight.

After Big wing I decided to make a Biplane to try and land on one of these peaks, It flies nicely, until you light off the booster. I set up the Aeropsike with thrust of 600 and reworked the ramjet inlet as a engine that refilled the tank at a rate slower then the main engine. Any Maneuvering and you end up losing the cockpit. Once reworked it just didn\'t land right.
