Laythe = Chronotrigger world???

Is Laythe the same world as Chronotrigger game?

Both are archipelago worlds, with small landmasses surounded with oceans. I find it very eerie that even though Laythe has water and an atmosphere, it is a desolate place. Perhaps Laythe is what happens if Lavos won? Or perhaps it is waiting for kebals to colonize it...
