It not really the drag, but the fact it wobbles and snaps in half despite the fact I have Kerbal Joint Reinforcement.

Also, I had to make a new save for it as my area around the launchpad had too much debris from my "Tests"

Did you turn gimbals off on all but the center most engines?

That may or may not be contributing to the wobbling wave of destruction.
