Technically without mods it is impossible to make a crane to reach the top of the VAB, because of the limit of space inside the VAB.

This is not true. In KSP, the internal height of the VAB is actually taller than the external height (which is about 75 meters). Is that messed up or what!? SO technically (and I have seen one person do this) you can build an object which can extend over the top of the VAB.
