Radon interplanetary lander and Nika launch vehicle

Recommended Posts

That's my favorite interplanetary design.

Craft: Radon A

Mass: 115 t

Crew: 3

Class: Interplanetary ship

Capabilities: Can get your Kerbals to Moho and back without gravity assists. Might carry some additional scientific equipment.

Special notes: Has detachable external tank. Leaves it in orbit and docks back to it after landings. Additional elements, like power sources and advanced RCS configuration are optional and depend on mission profile. Mind the low TWR - suicide burns may not be healthy.

Launch vehicle: Nika

Class: Heavy launcher.

Stages: 3 (4+2+1 parallel/crossfeed)

Takeoff mass: 790 t

Takeoff thrust: 10500 kN (all 3 stages)

Payload to LKO: 115 t

How much ÃŽâ€V does that have?

With total mass of 115-117 t, of which 90t is fuel, and 800 s of ISP, the calculated ÃŽâ€V is about 10 km/s if you take the external tank all the way with you. With the ability to leave the tank in orbit and throw it away when it's empty, you get even more.

The lander itself has about 4 km/s of ÃŽâ€V. In the last transfer in the video (Moho-Kerbin) the lander isn't fully fueled (that's about the amount of fuel you are left with by that moment in normal moderately efficient Moho mission) and it pulls out more than 3 km/s (that's not very efficient transfer, but Jeb got bored and had enough fuel)
