VTOL Rover/Boat SSTO!

Recommended Posts

Yup, you read the title right! I call this thing the Go Anywhere Machine.

Feature List:

  • Simplistic design. Low part count, no clipping, and non-spammed radial intakes.
  • Features horizontal or vertical takeoff and landing. It takes off at just 40 m/s horizontally, and it lands vertically on its tail with four extendable landing legs.
  • Uses a single RAPIER engine for getting into orbit and for landing. No flameouts, just fly into orbit with full throttle and wait for it to automatically switch you over to rocket mode.
  • Amazing control authority in flight provided with advanced canards at the front of the aircraft, plus a powerful reaction wheel for sharp turns.
  • The reaction wheel allows you to easily pull the aircraft straight up and get ready to land vertically. It can easily land on the Vehicle Assembly Building's helipad.
  • Two Ruggegized rover wheels are used for rear landing gear. The vehicle is capable of over 45 m/s on rover wheels alone! Power is provided by four RTGs.
  • Extendable design. This design only uses a 1/3 full fuel tank to get into orbit (I edited it with Tweakables). You can easily put a docking port on it, refuel it in space, and take it to other planets if you want.

Action Groups:

1 toggles rover wheel motors on and off. They're off by default for takeoff.

2 toggles landing legs extended or retracted. The "G" key is set to only control the front aircraft landing gear.

3 toggles the RAPIER engine's mode. Push 3 if you want to make it easier to land vertically.

It's not necessary, but if you want to, you can map another action group for toggling the intakes on or off to reduce drag while going into space.
