Maximum science from one mission., at start of career. STOCK .23

Recommended Posts

You are at the start of a new career.

Your Program Director is new at this, so he has NO access to any mods. At all. Not even information-only tools. We are talking pure stock, ver 0.23

Science is at ZERO.

Your task is this: Generate the *absolute maximum* of science from one mission.

For the purpose of this challenge, "mission" is defined as sending one craft to the launchpad or runway.

Feel free to do multiple probes, multiple launches, multiple eva's. Might be a bit difficult without any decouplers, etc...

P.S. I would advise against walking to the north pole for a surface sample, but it is quite allowed.

Scoring is total science gathered by the time you start the next mission, i.e. when you would have to send something to the pad or runway again.

As Kelbalnaughts are a scarce resource, your score will be penalized -10% of gross science income for every Kerbal that dies, and -5% for any Kerbal that is alive but stranded away from home.

Feel free to enter as many entries as you like, just please edit any obsolete entry's first line to inform me.

Best so far:

1) MarvinKitFox - Orbital - Type: Orbital survey rocket - 137 science

BunnyHopper II - Type: repeat lander - 72 Science (previous attempts)

Revised, see my orbiter survey.

=======================

Here is my first, basic, attempt..

Meet the BunnyHopper II.

Some fuel, some engines. Bottom-mounted capsule for easy access to the ground.

The special patented Absorba-Max girder legs allow high-speed landings, rapid lateral sliding, and even crawls down any slope > 1/15 or so!

Experimentally tested to allow a landing at 145m/s, if you only need to land once

So, basically a lander capable of surveying Launchpad, KSC, Runway, shores, grassland, and (when handled by a better pilot that I) water.

Science gathered, when I remembered to do science and not go WHEE,WHOOSH!...... 72 points.

P.S. You see that trasmitter antenna below the capsule?

Yes, it can also transmit data, if you have enough elec. But its primary purpose is to provide early-warning for impending ground impact!

To the Mun, using tech-zero stock?

Owch!

I can barely get an orbiter around Kerbin.

The whole concept of incendiary stage separation is.... painful to me.

Anyways, here is my orbital survey..

Uses SRB overheat as stage separators.

And Many, Many command capsules to provide the teensy SAS control ]needed during launch.

Final science: 137

Might as well have a look at a previous challenge: In this thread several crazy are presented to unlock the complete tree in two launches, with first launch science harvest well into the quadruple-digit figures.

Current max: 5528 allmhurans "Minas Anor" with a huge interplanetary trip to Eve and the Joolian moons + return.
