Spaceplane Orientation and Staging

Recommended Posts

I would like to deploy a missile, controlled by an octo probe core, from a moving spaceplane.

This works perfectly, until I actually try to control the missile. For some reason, it is automatically supplied a sideways orientation, despite hanging vertically from my plane:

This makes movement and guidance onto the target frustratingly tricky, as I have to reorient myself completely, and I can't keep the controls straight at all. This is unacceptable.

I have tried recreating the missile as part of the plane body, so it begins with a proper front-back up-down orientation, then attaching it, but the side orientation persists. I have tried rotating the octo core every conceivable direction and number, it changes nothing.

Can anyone help me fix the missile so it flies like my plane? Thanks.

It's the way the "initial view" works. You've essentially created a new craft and it defaults to the same side view as when you first started your plane on the runway. That's why it moves sideways, but I'm also at a loss as to how to fix it.

After you switch to the missile, have you clicked on the probe core to select "control from here" ?

It controls from there automatically by switching to it. ?

I have tried to 'control from here' during the plane's flight, but nothing changes - so it's either not working or it is in fact oriented correctly while the spaceplane is attached.

The default control orientation is not always lined up to the probe core esp. when it's a vessel separation type situation. Try releasing the bomb, then switching to it, then clicking "control from here" and let us know how it goes

That's weird. If so, they should fix that eventually. For now, thanks to subassemblies and/or Select Root, it is possible to reconstruct the plane around the missile. This allows for easier, quicker separation so I don't have to right click a moving vessel and have it crash while I fight a GUI.

It isn't a "control from here" issue. Control isn't a problem, it is that the view defaults to a side view on initiation.

So like when you first launch your plane. The view always starts out looking at the right side of the airplane (rockets also, but besides the point). You're able to rotate this view, and it becomes the view for the airplane. When you release the probe part, the new craft initializes and you start out with the side view.

I hadn't thought about constructing the airplane around the probe. That should work assuming you only want to drop one probe/bomb. (I usually throw junk on after the fact.)
