Smallest Stock Single Stage To Solar Escape

Recommended Posts

Escaping from Kerbin\'s gravity well is easy. From Kerbol\'s, not so much. All stock parts, except for decouplers are allowed. Retuning SAS/ASAS Kp, Ki, and Kd values is permissible, but changes must be listed. Fewest parts and lowest liftoff weight are the goals. Bonus points for higher velocities after final burn, and/or leaving Kerbin\'s SOI. Additional bonus points for clever maneuvers.

Interestingly, this can be done without any slingshots, as my attempt shows:

The SSSTSE consists of 95 LFTs, 18 LV-T30s, 1 LV-T45, 18 Struts, 1 ASAS (untuned), 1 Command module. 134 parts, for a GLOW of 278.2

Initial launch was into the lowest parking orbit possible.

Escape burn was performed at approximately local midnight.

Considering stock engines and decouplers are incredibly heavy, I\'m not too sure.

This challenge should be working towards the outer edge of a single stage\'s ?V, with gravity and aerodynamic drag being serious issues. That stock fuel tanks can now be mounted on radial decouplers (or with radial skin to skin connections), also does a lot to alleviate the staging penalties.

As an example of a two stage rocket that can do this with a flight profile much like my single stage example:

edit: Does this mean that it would be more interesting to do a smallest solar escape challenge with decouplers? :-[

Note the challenge being for solar escape, not solar orbit; the requirement here is ~3 km/s more harsh, possibly more.

This. That said, getting Kerbin escape on a 3 tank rocket is better than I thought possible...

edit (May 16, 2012): MechJeb makes smaller single stage to solar escape easy:
