Where are extreme EVAs still possible?

Recommended Posts

We all have noticed that .23 put a serious nerf on EVA packs with their limited fuel. The question must then be asked, how has this hurt extreme EVAing? in .22 it was possible to go land on minmus and return to orbit with just the EVA pack. Bop, Gilly, Pol, and Minmus were all able to do this (Eeloo too?). So where can and can't you still do this? Is Minmus now one way (just down or just up) or is it out entirely?

I've had my hands tied with 14 Flags so I haven't been able to test this yet. Anyone who can give some info on where this is still doable is gratefully appreciated.

To aswer your question, you only need to consider that the jetpack "contains" 600 m/s of Dv and apply a thurst of 270 N, so:

you can't land on Eeloo and Mun and bigger bodies

you can land on Mimnus or smaller bodies

you can perform an Extreme EVA (land, take-off and orbit again) only on very small planet as Gilly and Pol

In fact, nothing has changed since 0.22 EVA, only the fuel name.

I did several extreme EVAs on Minmus, including landing at a specific point (another craft I had on the ground) and returning to the orbiter, including rendezvous and entering the craft. The fuel is tight but it can be done. I did this all in 0.23 when I discovered that ground-to-orbit only doesn't count as extreme EVA and I had been wearing the ribbon in error. Well I feel it still wasn't a very difficult challenge, even with tight fuel margins, because the TWR of a Kerbal in EVA on Minmus is really high. You just have to know what you are doing and not waste fuel. I'm sure if done perfectly, one could perform a landing and orbital rendezvous with over 10% fuel remaining. I didn't fly very accurately, I just used a basic Scott Manley style landing and take-off.
