Help me save these Kerbals!

In this particular save I've been doing quite well and haven't lost any kerbals. However this asymmetrical flameout followed by the disintegration of one wing looks set to change that.

Any ideas on how to land these guys safely?

Open sas,it may help a little. Situation looks bad but I think you can manage to land. Try to land on ship's back,It will slow you down,and always put nose up.

Assuming there are only 2 Kerbals in the front 2 cockpits, I would fly close to the ground and then immediately pull up on the stick to kill all horizontal speed. Then, pointing up I'd let the aircraft slowly fall back down and crash on it's rear. Essentially lithobraking and allowing the aircraft body to absorb the damage. The cockpits should fall off safely.

I'd like a save file so that I could test out that theory.

will a save work while I'm in atmos?

battery is dead so the SAS doesn't work. (0.20 file so we didn't need electricity back then)

edit: just noticed I forgot to add the other kerbal so its just one in there, though I still want to save him!

I think you can, if you can get the nose up so that you hit tail-first, the cockpit should survive as long as you're not going too fast.

If you are still in orbit or if part of your orbit is in space (if its a space plane) I would suggest sending a rescue craft up to get the crew back safely. Then you can dock a probe core to the docking port and try and salvage the ship in some of the ways mentioned (or you could just smash it into the ground...)

I'm at 5000m so not even close to orbit.

Good news! I managed to land on a relatively flat area and the kerbal survived. The other wing was ripped off during the landing but the craft was recovered mostly intact.

Also discovered that the rear hatch is blocked so all in all quite a few tweaks needed.
