Water: Landings vs Splash

Recommended Posts

Saw this as unanswered and since I'm busy collecting all the splashed down points and didn't see this as a possible answer I'll add it: Land in a lake in a desert and your are splashed down at the desert. Same goes for all the other biomes. Not sure about landed but I think I saw this while testing to see if a craft floats. I very gingerly taxied it from the runway all the way down to the water and into it. While it was floating but still touching shore I believe I saw 'landed' water. I barely took note though because I wanted to get it farther off so I applied some power to drift away and then saw splashed down. I could easily be wrong. On that. It's been a few weeks.

Surprised, and yet not surprised.

I shared a post about this in the stickied question at the top of this forum.

I don't know how well-known this is, but discovered it for myself not too long ago:

Landing (not Splashing) is possible in the Water biome - the islands off the shore at KSC are classed as Water.

Conversely, Splashing (not Landing) is possible in most other biomes with water in them, e.g. shorelines, rivers or lakes.

The main use of this is for science rewards, e.g. surface samples, EVA reports etc. I don't have an exhaustive list of those that are possible, but I would suspect that the Ice Caps and Mountains are unlikely to work out - if u find somewhere they do, let me know!

Necro alert, beware of undead.

I counted 3 necros today, but since a mod hasn't locked it and it's already too late, landing and splash are the exact same in terms of science. The reason they are different on Kerbin is because there are seperate biomes (e.g ocean, etc.). On eve, there is only one "main" biome, but splashed/landed. This means that no matter where you land you get the same science.

Hello i just foun an easier way to get sience by "landing on water".

1: you make the space ship being extra carefull that all the big weight is below (so it does not flip when on water).

2: you put a spearator (decoupler) in the upper part where the experiments will hapen.

3: you send your ship to water being carefull to splash ok and in the right orientation.

4: you actionate the decoupler. (you can previously check that you have no new science when trying the experiments).

5: you do the experiments again and now . surprize you have data because you are "landing on water".

Old thread, but yes, I've found that also. Similarly a Kerbal standing on a floating ship may be counted as "Landed" rather than "Splashed Down".

A few versions ago I encountered a bug where if I had a Kerbal walking on a boat, then switched to the boat itself, it too would be considered "Landed" while floating on the water. That bug is dangerous - if I left and returned to the craft it would drop beneath the sea then blow up. No idea if it still works.

Kerbal Engineer can display Situation as well as Biome. I usually have both on my HUD.

Sry for necro but this just got to be finally solved +bonus tips:

1. Landed means u touch ground

2. Splashed means u are floating in the liquid

3. Water is the biome, not the vessel state

In this case ALL biome x state combinations are possible. (splash highlands* seems to be most difficult if u havent spotted it by accident, rest are very predictable from the sattelite scan + map orientation)

Spoiler

Longest river, small spot without shores somewhere in the middle

Potatos:

+ u land on water near the edge of ice caps, u see craft sitting on the icy ground but science says u stand on the water (Landed + Water)

+ u splash ice/cap/tundra flying straight to the N pole at the spot when 3 biomes meet (tundra/ice/water) theres a huge lake and u can also find a underwater mountain there so splashmountain possible

+ u splash southern ice at the edge of the ice just near the cliffs

+ u splash desert by finding lakes west from KSC (200km?)

+ use satelite with a probe core able to scan biomes and position it above 600km orbit to see all planet

+ take 3 science containers so u can collect 4 same reports (containers + crew member) to drain every leftover of science (some experiments leave some to be "scienced" and u need to make it 3-4 times to fill the bar - this saves some money as u make all in one run

+ u dont need to land on the roofs of KSC buildings to achieve "building" situation, just gently poke the main doors with ur front bumper and turn permabrakes for the time u touch it to fill all science

+ VAB south complex is only available on VAB lvl 2 and it dissapears when u upgrade it more

If u dont use any science mods, read the bloody wiki science page to know the experiment/biome/situation/position combinations

DONT go for the sh#tty KSC buildings science before u got a decent set of instruments - its faster and cheaper to go MANNED mission with extra scientist to reset bays on polar Minimus orbit and make 10+ valuable experiments than derp around like fool to catch all buildings every time u gather new science tool.

If you really stuck with science points deploy the Kerbal orbital mobile lab, use science relay mod and feed the lab with some noob experiments via e-mail ;P. Best results with 3 orbital labs (kerbin, mun, minimus) and unmanned probes left in different biomes for future lab feeding.

happy grinding

Yeah yeah necro, but I didn't see a post in this thread that really showed how to get these and I was scratching my head about them for a little while myself.

So without further ado:

Not easy (if at all possible) without some mods. note the concrete slabs in the inventory to weigh Jeb down.

ironically though, if you drop them they will float away. heh.

It's easier than that. To get "landed" on water you have to find some solidified water to land on, yes?
