Yes you will go to space! Jumbo-64 SSTO MF SP

Space Academy’s greatest achievement yet! The Jumbo-64 Single Stage to Orbit Space Plane!

kCtGkKZ.jpg

After dozens of configurations and more test flights then I care to admit. I finally got a full Jumbo-64 from the run way into orbit! I had almost given up but left the throttle open during a test flight and it made it to low orbit with enough fuel to “ovalize†the orbit! Once I correct the fuel configuration I should be able to reach low orbit with enough fuel to deliver the jumbo-64 to space station!

This is was almost an obsession. To get the fuel configuration right I had to mod the wing panels to kill the fuel cross feed. The orange tank is locked in the SPH and TAC balances the fuel so the COM doesn’t shift drastically during flight. Finding the flight profile for this thing was half the challenge. If using a staged rocket is like “punching†out of the atmosphere. Flying a Jumbo-64 into orbit is more like “slicing†through.

Stay tuned for more!

That's a serious spaceplane! My own SSTOs aren't capable of lifting anything but crew to orbit so getting any sort of cargo there, let alone a jumbo-64 - yeah I can appreciate the difficulty!

Congrats! The secret for SSTO is Wings, intakes and turbojets. Be careful on landing though, since having multiple tanks shift your weight around so much when empty.

For example, this ssto from my old thread cant land to save himself. A stacked double or tri wing design is much more controllable.

Nice work!

My suggestion is that you have too many turbo engines and you could swap out that massive rocket engine with 2-3 nukes and fire them up earlier to assist your turbos. With wings on an ssto you need only 6 turbos + 3 nukes to get a jumbo into orbit with only a fair amount of air hogging.

Ascent profile is the big one. Move past that thinking and into ascent corridors which, you gauge by vertical speed and acceleration. It will save you massive amounts of gas in the design phase. For me it was a long road to advance my thinking from ascent profiles to ascent corridors.

Keep up that sweet ssto action.

Make one that has two big red tanks as part of the body and that carries up a third big red and can leave that big red in orbit, and then return and land back at the KSP runway..

I've been trying to do this for months and it is hard.

This is not one of mine. This example shows that you need at least two orange tanks worth of fuel on the plane to make it. The Goose carries the fuel in 2 x-200s and 8 FL-800s.

My goal was always to deliver the fuel and land the whole thing back on kerba firma but I was impressed and inspired when I saw this one. Good luck to you

It sure is..

That is why it needs the two large orange tanks. to get to and back from Duna xD

The only person I know of that has done this is pa1983, But I cant seem to find his video's anymore on youtube.. he doesn't seem to be interested in KSP that much lately...

Ohh I know it has been done... Just trying to do it is hard.

Can that go to duna, land, leave orange fuel tank on duna, take off, come back to kerbin and land?

This is my ultimate goal.

That's one of my current projects.

It's only half finished and I need to find another 3-400dV to take the jumbo to Duna and back reliably. I'm still not sure that as a concept this makes a whole lot of sense. It easily drops two jumbos into orbit already, the cargo hold is massive. So, the best option would be to transport the cargo with planetary transfer vehicle attached. This craft is 100T dry and that's alot of wasted dV. It's better to have a orbital specialist with a transfer specialist waiting to pick up the cargo from orbit.

Having said that. The superstructure(30T) of this thing is basically a big spring and built specifically for rough landings so, it also functions very well as a lander to service bases on an atmospheric planet. This would be the most important reason to cart the entire craft across the Kerbol system. To ensure your package arrives undamaged at the other end, seeing as you can REALLY strap your payload down in a cargo hold prior to takeoff.

That's deeply ambitious!!

If you manage that, you have to show me how! :)
