Kerbal Dynamics: Drunkmonkey Challenge

Recommended Posts

OK, you might go "HUH?" at this one, but...

THE CHALLENGE:

Build an AIRBREATHING aircraft and carry six Kerbals to the Island.

THE RULES:

- Usual "No 'Sploits" rules apply.

- Your aircraft MUST take off and land from the KSC and Island runways.

- Your airframe MAY NOT use symmetry!

- NO rockets or electric engines. Your engines MUST be of the LF+air variety.

- Here's a twist on the symmetry: ONLY ONE of each wing or control surface may be used.

- Maximum of TWO SAS units (ie 1 SAS-equipped command pod and 1 ASAS box is IT, or a command chair and two ASAS units - or even a probe core and two ASAS units).

- Take as many trips as you want, but your aircraft MUST be able to carry Kerbals.

Proof is in a screenshot of your aircraft landed intact on the Island runway with six Kerbals standing in front of it. No points, this is scored on success or failure as a binary condition. Let's see just how messed up our aeronautical department really is!

(Challengers' note: Hopefully this one won't be as taxing on my poor system as the Planetes challenge. I will get back on that one, just as soon as I figure out why exiting the savegame results in ship duplication and Kraken attacks.)

here you go ihtoit.....

it's minimal takeoff speed is actually LOWER than it's cruise speed. which is as low as 48m/s with all seats full at 120m alt (minimal takeoff speed around 40-43m/s). (6+1 passenger) although recommended cruise speed is around 53m/s upto 98m/s, above 115m/s it start wobbling too much

My entry! Was dodgy as hell and loading all the Kerbals up was quite time consuming but we got there in the end! Staggered landing gear and an offset tail rudder made both takeoff and landing interesting!

Managed to get it up to around 230 m/s at lower altitudes and it flew surprisingly stable, if not slightly offset, didn't dare take it any faster!

wait your plane doesnt go straight? even with SAS?

mine actually does, but if you tilt just a touch, it's gonna slide way, way...... but still controllable. even the controls are limited, it veers to the right, that is if i put any amount of major steering, if is made in lots small movements, it's fine. the other problem with my plane is landing..... the wheels on right side of the plane sits higher, since the wing is thinner, so standing still, the plane tilts to the right

BTW i forgot to say i was using FAR, which should've made this harder

Well, it's able to fly in one direction stable and hold a heading, but the nose actually points slightly left of the direction of travel!
