[Scenario] Polar Crash Site - Something strange just touched down on Kerbin!

Recommended Posts

KSC Command to all exploration teams: We have received several concerned calls from Kerbals claiming to have seen a huge meteorite strike near the south pole. Since we do not know of any recent flight experiments in that area, we must assume that whatever just struck our atmosphere there has come from very far away. Our trusty imaging satellite did pickup some strange sensor readings as well. It seems that the object is emitting some kind of energy.

We are calling you for mission PRELUTARI - "Polar Reconaissance expedition to locate the unknown thing and research it"

So, this is a "story mode" challenge, which means that there will be no leaderboard or something similar. I have prepared a scenario with a mission objective which might (or might not) be entertaining to explore and play around with. You might first want to send a robotic probe or manned scout mission to get some better visuals, then come up with a plan on how to deal with what you find. Or skip the scout mission and directly bring a huge ready-for-anything construction/destruction/transportation behemoth to the site and see if it can do anything useful. How you get there (by ship/airplane/suborbital hop), and wether you decide to bring as much stuff as you can to back KSC, or just take a look inside, or use it as a military shooting target is entirely up to you. Either way, there are some challenges and surprises to be found inside the shell! I hope you enjoy this one.

This is a stock scenario, so you wont need any mods to play. Just extract this zip inside your "saves/scenarios" folder and the mission should show up in the "Scenarios" listing. It is possible to do a lot of stuff without mods, but mods like Infernal Robotics or KAS are obviously really good candidates for doing some advanced on-site shenanigans. I am curious what you come up with.

Since this is a lot about exploration, please put spoiler warnings in your reports if you post images or before you tell us about your findings!

Hmm, I'm doing the polar challenge right now. I was making a story out of that, but perhaps I will scrap that idea and switch my storyline over to here. Although, since I'm driving there, it will take me quite some time to arrive. :D

EDIT: Downloaded. Hopefully you don't mind me trying to take some creative liberty with the storyline. I'll see what the team can get done tonight!

A little sneak-peak (will do a better story-like writeup soon).

This is the 1st time for me to use IVA-only views and also FAR. Surprisingly, my plane did well, reached heights of ~35km and got fast and reliably to the crash site.

A small suborbital scout plane was sent out to investigate the site and take pictures. (removed the img tags to not spoil too much)
