ART Aesthetic & Realistic TechTree Mod

Version 1.0 for KSP 0.23

What is this?

ART is a simple modified TechTree. It brings the stock KSP parts into a new order to unlock, with the intention to make the career mode more realistic and the possibility to make the early rockets look like early rockets.

Okay, so what is different from stock KSP?

Well, using ART, you start with a dumb, unmanned rocket, with just a thermometer on it for some athmospheric research. It will take you a lot of starts and failures and gathering science until you're able to launch the first kerbal into space. So generally the game is harder, and it is more focussed on the early days of rocketry.

Also, you have weak jet powered aircrafts very early, and you will probably need them to push your space program forward, just like the first astronauts were test pilots once.

How do I install this?

Just download it, unzip, and put the "Squad" folder provided in the download into your "GameData" folder. Overwrite all the existing part.sqs files from the stock parts, and start a new career. There you go!

Is ART compatible with mods?

Yes, it should be, since the originally TechTree is untouched. You may have a different experience playing ART with mods, since the mod parts may change the intented way the ART TechTree works.

What about licence and distribution and stuff

Do what ever you want with it. I basically made this for myself, but since maybe someone will like it I shared it with the awesome community of KSP. If you want to share it, mod it, make it part of something just go ahead.

Any tips for starting with ART?

You need to develope the rocketry branch, since only this will get you to manned spaceflight.

Many mods do not have a reaction wheel anymore, and SAS / ASAS is very heavy now. This will force you to use RCS or engines with gimbals to control your rockets.

Some tips:

-Include game version in title.

-Pics

-Compatibility with KSPI and it's tree?

Going to keep tabs on this. Altough to be fairly honest kerbals are just the species to stick someone in a rocket and THEN decide putting a computer

Is that a necro? Well, even if it is, I'm going to comment anyway.

I've long been dissatisfied with the Squad's technology tree and the way career mode has been handled in general, and this package sounds like a good idea and exactly the kind of thing I would want -- not too different from stock like "Better Than Starting Manned" which attempts to take over everything, just rearranged to fix the silliest things... ...but this is very badly executed.

  1. Part configs with overwriting. That's precisely what ModuleManager has been made to prevent.
  2. Instead of actually rearranging the technology nodes in the tree, parts are moved around in the tree instead. So any mod that tries to follow the stock tree -- as most of them do -- is now out of place entirely.

#1 is just very bad form these days. It's impractical to move around parts from every mod out in the wild, but nevertheless, nodes can be rearranged using ready-made plugins, and I suspect a half-decent tree could well be made.

Looks like it'll be years before career mode gets sorted out into something that makes sense...
