Haven't played for awhile

I haven't played this version. Seems like I can create a huge eliptical orbit to intercept the mun, but then later if I try to do a burn to wrap myself around the mun I get no reaction from the burn. The orbit doesn't change no matter which way I point the rocket. This has happened several times in different places. Seems like after a few burns the burns stop having any effect and if I continue I just end up running out of fuel.

Also, please direct me to the best, most detailed and correct "get into orbit" tutorial you know of, thanks.

As far as your issue, you might not have a high enough TWR to change your orbit fast enough. If you are actually doing a burn you are not likely time-warping, but it is possible so you might want to make sure you are not on x5 warp. Some pics would help.

. It's a tad dated, but the concepts are sound.

Welcome (possibly back) aboard!

Once you get into the Mun's SOI, wait until you reach the Periapsis marker. Then, simply burn retrograde. You'll sink into a nice, highly eccentric orbit which, with a few short burns, will take shape to a nice, circular one.

Assuming you have enough fuel and TWR, that is. Without those two factors, you're liable to shoot right past the Mun and either be 1) Flung into deep space, 2) Come back on a Free Return trajectory, or 3) put yourself into a Kerbinar orbit that is tough to get out of.
