Moving an Asteroid... On Minmus

Recommended Posts

A skycrane-style vehicle with just two of those fancy new 2000kN engines should have more than enough thrust to lift that asteroid on Minmus, and the specific impulse isn't bad at all so you'd get decent fuel economy. Maybe strap 4 on for good measure.

You should be able to blow the asteroid around the surface using rocket engines aimed at it (with thrust compensated by another set of engines mounted the other way). Relatively small rover could be able to do it.

Interesting, but how controllable would it be (since the rock insn't perfectly round)?

I'm a little late to this, hope it isn't considered a necro but I saw your post in the .24 "gigathread" suggesting you still wanted ideas and I had one. I wonder if you could use a skycrane-like system but mount it directly into the asteroid itself so that it becomes its own crane. Make a series of narrow high thrust rocket modules with horizontally mounted claws on the them and wheels on the bottom. Send them all out there and roll them up to the 'roid to be attached with all engines facing downward. Put some form of control mechanism on the top with copious amounts of torque (bonus: tons of RCS on the rockets) and lift off. Something like 3 orange tanks with mainsails side by side per module (upscale to the larger parts if necessary) with at least one claw on the central one and attach them radially as needed. It probably won't be stable but it "should" work assuming the claws don't break off and you don't just start to cartwheel from unintentional thrust vectoring as soon as you lift off. Even if you destroy it all from a bad landing it should get you closer, I'd say it's worth a shot.

Looks like I had the same or similar idea to 700NitroXpress... Not quite what I pictured when I read his but looking back yeah pretty much.

Something like this but less poorly drawn and more rockets. Ideally KAS struts to keep the rockets from folding upwards even if the claws don't break... That's what I'd try anyway, it's the best I've got. Your problem is a unique one. lol

This, but multiple ones attached radially and possibly bigger.

...Take my suggestion with a grain of salt and your imagination since I haven't actually messed with a Class E. If this works, I expect a video :P
