I'll be at the Penny Arcade Expo in Boston this weekend and looking over the schedule I noticed an entry for 8PM Friday night, Kerbal Space Program tournament.

I wonder what this might entail... And who else will be there to watch rockets go kaboom with me :)

If it's anything like the last one, you're not going to know what it'll entail until just before it starts. Good luck if you enter. See if you can stream your play on Twitch.

The tournament was a lot of fun, we had about 2 hours to build and launch.

Points were awarded for landing kerbals on specific planets, for each kerbal that was EVA on the surface.

Mun = 1, Eve = 2, Ike = 2.5, Eeloo = 4, Laythe = 5.

Someone there pulled about a 600 point win by landing a freaking colony ship on Laythe with 120 kerbals on board o-O

There were about 80 attendees, all in all, with a lot of beginners. The closest landing objective that was worth points was the Mun, then Eve, then Ike, and I'd say that only 20-25 people landed anything off of Kerbin. Still, everyone had fun.

I tested the waters (been a while since I played a completely stock game of kerbal) with a 7 crew Munar lander and got them there with 90% lander fuel remaining, EVA'd them and parked them there for 7 points :) I re-used the same lander for the Duna SOI trip and beefed up the launch vehicle a little, then sent it on its way. While that was in transit, I launched an identical ship to Eve, and a 23 crew ship to Laythe (5 cans and a 3-man pod). My Ike lander captured around duna with the luckiest gravity catch I've ever pulled off - Ike snagged it into low Duna orbit, which aerobroke off a lot of speed, and I only needed a 20 m/s burn to reorient and reach Ike again with a 15k peri. Landed that crew for another 20.5 points. Eve crew messed up - I timed my transfer window way wrong. They're in orbit at 500km x 1.5Mkm and out of gas :P My laythe lander ended up never reaching its target because we ran out of time. I managed to land a clone of my Laythe ship on the Mun for an extra 23 points, but it wasn't enough to score any placement.

First and second place had over 500-600 points with 100+ kerbal ships landed on Laythe. Next person had around 160 points, not sure what they did though. We only collected the top 3 scores.

Coolest things I saw that evening:

Someone made a tentacle monster. Really tall, with loads of small fuel tanks, and little engines. So many engines that the tentacle monster's tentacles (stacks of small probe tanks) bounced and flailed around wildly and it looked awesome :D...

Kerbal Cannon. Someone sitting near me made a missile system with a command chair and basically shot kerbals around at the buildings!

EVA Pad > Orbit launch... Which didn't work. Another player and I both tried launching a kerbal, EVA, into orbit using naught but decouplers. It was messy and didn't work. Also, kraken that Danny would be proud of :3

SRB-copter. Helicopter type thing with blades/wings tipped with SRB's. LORD ALMIGHTY IT SPUN AROUND SO FAST...

I don't have pictures because we were playing on provided PC's but they'll probably show up eventually, I took about 20 screenshots and the tournament organizers said they would be collecting them.

It was a lot of fun - I've never really thought of doing a base rush / rapid colonization kerbal game before and it was really entertaining listening to the oooooh's and aaaah's from a lot of players as their creations did what they do best (blow up horrifyingly).

I'll definitely take part in the next one :)

Edit - I got a photo-op of myself with Jeb ;) I'll upload it later - camera's at home.
