So, I accidentally made a functional vehicle.

Recommended Posts

Well, not entirely by accident, but I was expecting it to need a lot more work before it would, well, work. I kinda just slapped a bunch of parts together in a plane shaped object and launched it. It took me 2(well, 3) launches to get to orbit and looked like this:

Has anyone else accidentally made functional vehicles?

Closest thing would be my Smith 2, done for a cheap science challenge. Tiny little probe, stuck it on top of an S1 SRB, and wanted to avoid needing a reaction wheel. Tipped the booster over 5 degrees, and it just worked, flying by itself to a nice apoapsis.

I once built an inverted rocket off the cuff to see if I could land it on the Mun. The whole mission went really well, at least until I was returning to the command module and decided to see what happens when you retract a ladder out from under a Kerbal...

I have a Dragonfly-like plane that consists of 3 of the largest SRB's available, some decouplers and a ton of wings. It literally flaps itself to a surprisingly high altitude before plummeting back at which point it glides in an oddly graceful manner back to a relatively problem free landing. I have no idea why or how it works.

Don't touch it or at least save it where it is. for some reason once you make "improvments" it'll stop functioning

Amazingly, my modifications made it work better in the most makeshift looking manner possible; It now has docking ports and RCS.

I had something accidentally work. But it only accidentally worked once! I slapped a quick(ish) plane together to see if I could get an orange tank's worth of fuel to orbit. It got up on the first attempt (and almost landed) but...I could never get it to space again, no matter what modifications i did or with the original "accident" I have no idea what changed :(

I was never able to get it to space again. 90% of the time it didnt even make it off the runway :( That was an old design though, before I knew how to intake spam and build a functional ssto. Might have to attempt it again when I get home

I could sort of say this was 'accidental':

Made a ground-capable bus thingy, decided to attach wings to it and found that actually it was capable of flight. By that I mean that it's only capable of flight with the help of a few vertically placed engines to provide lift to get off the ground; once it's in the air it works surprisingly well.

It even lands, in the sense that 90% of the time the flight ends in a massive explosion on contact with the ground and 10% of the time it coasts along until it hits the slightest little bump and explodes.
