Test Gravity Chamber/s

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, first post on here but I frequent the KSP Sub Reddit quite a lot nowadays. I'm a newer player -about a month- and after installing a Rover mod which adds the 'Rover Brain' and the gain of science from the rover I decided to post this idea on Reddit.

The idea I posted on Reddit was well received, here's the link; http://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/23fr4d/test_gravity_chambers_as_a_good_idea/

Here is the meat of the ost! :)

I'm finally starting to get into 'Rover construction' but testing my rovers on the landing pad is more guess work than anything, now I'm sure there is some complex math involved for the gravity of Minmus/Mun but

Would it not be a good idea for a 'Gravity testing room' to be introduced that you can set the gravity of and then test your rover to perfection before launching it into space and eventually to the desired location?

It could be unlocked later in the tech tree and then the new building appears on the overview of the current buildings, would this be a good idea?

Not that realistic, and removes the challenge of knowing whether your rover will work. Not one really knew if the first Moon rovers would work.

It wouldn't be bad, but it feels a bit cheaty. Also, what is the point of having it deep in the tech tree? By then you'll know if your rover works anyway...

A rover/lander simulator with different settings for gravity/atmo/etc has been suggested many times, and I think it's a good idea. It can be very frustrating to get your spaceplane all the way to Duna just to find out that it can't safely land.

If you want to get a rough idea of how things will fare, hit Alt-F12 then click Hack Gravity to get a Gilly-esque experience

I know you can do this but I'd love to see my rover tested in different levels of gravity.

^Apolgies I didn't know it had been suggested, I'm new :)

There should maybe be a more realistic/Kerbal (rarely do these things go together...) solution - somewhere in the area to the North of the runway, there could be a test track for rovers, with sand pits, inclines, rock fields, etc. The interesting part is that to simulate different gravity conditions, the kerbals either attach helium balloons or heavy weights to the top of their rovers.
