So my computer crashed when i was afk and when i came back it would go to the starting windows screen, then stay there forever. So i found that making a recovery disk (which was recommended) helped to a minor extent. it took like 5-6 hrs to fix and I haven't tried to reboot due to fears of not working again and losing my precious data. but I managed to get in and am typing this but everything takes a few minutes to open and everything is laggy. Windows 7() Lenovo Thinkpad T500 3.75 GB RAM ton of space left on HD around 120gb.I am installing 2 updates 1 important and 1 optional to try to fix it.

Super smart techies, give me your opinion... ... ...

My brother has this same problem. He took it to the local computer place and discovered that something was funky with the hard drive. Another thing happened with the computer with I am using is that it got a bad case of root kit which is a really bad kind of virus that sneaks in past your anti virus stuff and starts wrecking everything. We had to take that in to the computer store as well.

Yup, sounds like a failing drive to me. Either that or some form of overheat.

Never had problems with overheat... And this would be my 2nd failed hd in like half a year... This would have to happen to me XD Anyone know a good online computer giveaway???

HDDs suck. SSDs can fail too of course, but I recommend getting one since it doesn't have moving parts and is faster all around.

Sadly still quite easily brickable if you're unsure how to treat them - my missus managed to accidentally trash a 4 month old SSD by using to cache photos during upload. It essentially filled it to the brim, deleted the cache and repeated about a dozen times. It still soldiers on, but crashes whenever you try to download anything bigger than a few Mb, or in a few other circumstances.

Keep meaning to replace it...
