What planet should I visit?

Recommended Posts

Greetings to all!

I come to you today with... A Question!

I've managed to get to Duna, Ike, Mun, Minmus, in orbit around Kerbol and I've also managed to strand the immortals on Eve. I was wondering what planet I should try and visit next. I could go to Jool, but it's a little far. Eeloo is probably possible, even with it's strange orbit. Eve isn't an option because of the high gravity, but Dres and Moho are probably do-able. What would you guys suggest? I have most of the Tech Tree unlocked except for some of the structural and spaceplane parts.

Thanks for reading

Jool. Easy to get an intercept and some beautiful sights too. A big moon system to visit that, with a bit of planning and careful gravity assists, can be done with relatively low amounts of fuel. Dres is a sad and lonely space potato, Moho takes far too much dV to get to and Eeloo isn't really worth the trip. Looks pretty though.

If you want to finish the tech tree, Jool. You can get a fairly substantial number of science points just by flying past each of the 5 moons, and perhaps landing on Vall, Bop and Poll (smaller than Tylo, no atmosphere like Laythe). For the most part it's also closer than Eeloo, if not in distance in terms of dV because of the possibility of aerobraking on arrival at Jool.

Working outwards:

Moho: Worth going to just to say "I went to Moho". The dV requirement is easily met using LV-Ns and other appropriately high-ISP engines, especially now than 0.375m parts make launching larger payloads into space almost trivial.

Eve: If you don't want to go to Eve itself, head to Gilly. The gravity, or lack thereof, is surprisingly fun.

Dres: Easy enough to get to, not much there. Still, potatoes.

Jool: See first paragraph of this post

Eeloo: A little harder than Jool, almost certainly a longer trip and less to do. However, it's very similar to the Mun so it's nice if you want a similar playground to the usual locally-orbiting rock above Kerbin :P

The simplest answer is "All of them".

Be warned, Moho only seems to be close but to get to it, you need some serious dv. It's the most distant planet in the system in terms of dv. Dres is an easy to reach variant of Moho.

And as I discovered yesterday, getting there is only half the issue, killing off the orbital speed takes a whole bunch of Dv, in fact I had to send a fuel supply ship to rendezvous for the return trip since I was left with hardly enough DV to leave moho SOI.

Jool is a good bet, lots to see and do, plenty of easy targets and it houses everybody's favorite planet, laythe plus it takes less DV to get to jool than Eeloo due to the obvious aerobraking options and gravity assisted departure (if you're into that kinda thing)
