you should fly at about 10km, however, if your rescue mission is occuring on Kerbin (which I assume it is) then you can just go to the tracking station, select the flight, then select recover. If however it is occurring on Laythe, it might just be better to do a sub-orbital hop top your destination.

the basic ones?

they are low alt engines....

as low as possible, like <6k is the highest i can recommend, beyond that, it just sucks too much fuel, while providing too little power.

if you want to go higher, use the high alt engines. at low alt, they barely have any power, their true power starts at 5k alt. the highest spesific impulse. beyond that, spesific impulse goes lower, but power goes much higher

If you have a light weight craft you can edge up to 20km on a single basic jet with two radial intakes. 15km will be easy for the uninitiated. There you will be able to cruise at just under mach 2. At 20km you can cruise at mach 2.5. This is all about how light your aircraft is, say a thrust to weight ratio of over 2.

the standard jet engines are only really efficient for low altitude flight (ie less than 10k)

BUT! if your craft can happily fly at 20km without flameout, then it might be worth it since your actual speed is potentially much much higher than at 5km, So for example "if" you are consuming just twice as much fuel per second at 20km than at 5km but are moving 4x faster, then distance wise its more efficient to travel at 20km although you will still consume fuel twice as quickly, however if you have the option of using turbojets, then I would recommend them every time since they allow you to reach absurd speeds, (my record is 2300m/s at 24km on TJ alone and I could of just about circumnavigated kerbin, twice)
