Wrong Brothers Again

Inspired by katateochi's amazing thread: The Wrong Brothers - Career Mode Done Differently Most of my time has been spent now accomplishing this. I'm surprised that this has not ended up in the 'Challenges' Forum, because it's a very rewarding and extremely educational challenge for designing and using planes (both air and space) to accomplish things we typically - and easily - use rockets for!

Go check it out, read it as if it was a novel or an O'Reilly Manual, give him some rep, and try it yourself.

I feel guilty that I hijacked his original thread to showcase some of my designs, so here is my own.

katateochi: if imitation is the greatest form of flattery, consider yourself thoroughly flattered.

My start was much like his: a solid rocket booster set on girder segments that we hope can gain some alt with very little control, and then land somewhere other than the runway.

Fast forward a year or so, and we have this now - the new Songbird class prototype, which should become the new cargo lifter after adding some docking ports and tweaking it's design:

This guy can reach an altitude of 20km in less than 5 mins, and 70km in 8 mins. 80-degree accent to 17km and a 10-20 degree accent up well over 25km on turbojets - before the Skipper needs to kick in.

Extremely easy to fly, and the eight turbojet engines give you a sense that atmosphere is a tool, not an obstacle to overcome.

This is way too much fun!

Thanks again katateochi

That's awesome man, glad your also attempting this crazy way of doing career!

That's a nice design you got there, very different to mine. My only suggestion is to use more wings panels, I used several layers of wings on my larger craft as that gives them much more lift without having to make really wide wings.

Looking forward to seeing how you carry this on!

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
