Subassemblies

Recommended Posts

Is there a way to save subassemblies that contain command modules? I'm trying to build an Apollo style rocket with detachable lander. I built the lander first and wanted to save it as a subassembly, but when I drag it to the drop zone I'm told the selected part is not detachable. Any tips?

Start by building your subassembly using something like a structural part or a decoupler as the root part, then build. That should allow you to save it as a subassembly.

Yeah, like claw said. Try to use the root part as something super lightweight, so it won't affect CoM location or where your RCS (if applicable) should be.

Also, remember that the attachment node that connects to the root part will be the one that the sub-assembly is attached by when you spawn it in... You don't want to have semi-rebuild the ship just because the attachment node is on the wrong end!

Subassemblies are meant to be attached to something. The best way to build a subassembly is to build it already attached to some placeholder the way you plan to be attaching it later. As said above, it's a good idea to use something small for that placeholder, e.g. cubic octagonal strut.

This way you can even make subassemblies attachable radially, with no exposed attach points.
