Updating KSP without deleting your designs

Recommended Posts

Hi I believe that all you have to do is to install KSP 23.5 and then copy and paste all of your craft files and sub- assemblies into your saves folder. As far as I am aware unless you have any mods the craft files should still be compatible.

Yep, that's all you need to do. Copy the Saves folder to a safe location. Download and install the latest version. Paste the backed up saves folder into the KSP folder, Profit!

Personally for each release of the game i make a new ksp folder to play out of (prevents the "it updated and everything is gone" problem)

Also since most of my installs end up heavily modded. It keeps me with a fresh ksp install in a different folder for when messing with stock game craft

Yes, copy the KSP/saves directory over (as others have said). Make sure you COPY and don't MOVE them because if there is an error, KSP will sometimes lock out craft or saves (or just plain delete them). If you copy them, then you'll have a backup in case something happens.

Also, when you "install" the updated KSP, I recommend putting it into it's own (new) directory. Don't copy/merge it into your old KSP directory.

Make yourself a folder for backing up KSP saves. Each update, put your save files in here before updating. After updating, copy (not move) one of the saves back into the KSP saves folder. Check that the new update hasn't corrupted the save in any way, then put all the saves back into the folder and delete any copies. Alternatively, you could keep a copy of each save as a backup that you can update either every now and then or before each update (I'd recommend this). Did this help? Did it make sense? I feel like I rambled some. Let me know if I've confused you at any point.

Most craft with all stock parts will work in 0.23.5. I transferred my Mun ship from the demo which flew just fine. You may want to update some parts such as adding solar panels before flying. For the demo ship, a pair of solar panels and the removal of a now extra SAS module were all the modifications needed.
