That's the other downside to active shielding...it gives you no protection from impacts. So you need a large passive shield anyway, you might as well just have one system that protects you from radiation and impacts.

Since the water shield is under very low pressure, punctures due to impact will not result in water shooting off into space like a geyser. At the most it will just slowly dribble out, and sensors on the hull should detect impacts rapidly and allow equally rapid repair. The amount of water you would lose is negligible.
