Return from Tylo

Recommended Posts

Background

Jeb was assigned a task to accompany cargo delivery to Laythe, then return home using his trusty spaceplane. Unfortunately, due to bureaucratic error, while the cargo was successfully delivered to Laythe, Jeb and his plane were deployed on Tylo. Fortunately instructions were to deploy him "on runway" and due to lack of any other suitable runway object on Tylo, Jeb was deployed on the edge of longest known perfectly flat area on the moon. Northern edge.

Jeb's objections that his plane is not designed for Tylo were left unanswered. Tracking Station only sent him a note that his flight has been terminated and he is expected to enroll for next flight from KSC in shortest achievable time.

Objective

Your task is to help Jeb get back home - launch from Tylo, return to Kerbin and land on KSC runway.

Supplementary Information

Jeb's spaceplane controls are:

1 - toggle turbojet engine

2 - toggle nuclear engine

3 - toggle single VTOL engine

4 - toggle dual VTOL engines

Nuclear engine is best controlled from probe core which is placed near to it.

There is an emergency fuel depot in highly elliptic orbit around Tylo. You are permitted to use it to refuel Jeb's plane. Note that visiting the depot is not necessary, it is possible to complete the challenge without it.

Rules

- No debug menu usage (infinite fuel, infinite RCS, hack gravity)

- No vehicle or resources teleportation (hyperedit etc)

- No mods that affect used parts or game physics. Informative mods allowed but if you're badass, you can do it without them.

- No recovery missions. KSC bureaucracy doesn't care how will Jeb return home.

- Quicksave/Quickload is ok to use

Instructions

To participate in the challenge, download the [scenario file] to your KSP/saves/scenarios folder. Then in main menu select Start Game -> Scenarios and select Return from Tylo.

Since I believe it is clear that once you reach the refueling depot you're done with the hard part, below is a proof it is possible.

I have also verified it is possible to complete the challenge without this visit.

Have fun!

My first serious attempt put me in orbit with about 800 m/s short of making the rendezvous. The plan should work, if I can figure out the best way to use the VTOL engines.
