how awesome would it be if you could create or modify existing parts (in game).

it would go something like: parts you unlocked via tech tree could be changed in size. so you could make a fuel tank larger and it would hold more fuel but weigh more, or increase the size of an engine to give it more thrust, but the efficiency would remain the same so it would burn more fuel quicker.

to increase efficiency you would need to get better parts from the tech tree. there would also have to be some sort of limit on how big or small you could make the parts because that could just break the game

ps i dont know if this thread already exists but i went back like 30 or so pages and didnt see anything

I agree that this could be an interesting addition into the game, but always remember that KSP is perhaps the most moddable game in existence. Try looking for some mods, I'm fairly certain that there are some that could take care of that.

this has been suggested before actually and to my knowledge there nothing like this except for probably procedural parts

I would advise you look into some procedural parts mods (Procedural parts/stretchySRB, Procedural fairings, PWings) and possibly Ubiozur's ingame part welding tool (making multiple parts into single parts).

I think these are the closest you can some to what you seek right now.

it could be great to have something in game, to assembe your own engines, out of parts you can unlock. i would like that concept more, but thats just my idea. think about how cool it would be, not something specific like selecting what fuel lines to use, just what power it should have, based on what parts there are in it, and it would require resources.
