Changing the tech tree without replacing it

Is there any way to graft a couple of new nodes onto the tech tree without replacing it entirely?

I want to add two nodes at specific points in the tree to hold the parts in my mod that don't fit particularly well into existing nodes. While I could replace the tree entirely - that I've figured out - that seems excessive to support this relatively simple set of changes, plus makes compatibility with tree-replacing mods unnecessarily difficult.

Is this possible? I haven't found a way in the course of various searches, but hopefully I've missed something.
