Cool video! I always like seeing stuff on heavy lifters. I would question something though. If I made a 700 ton space station, would your lifter be able to lift it? I say that because you say you lifted aprox 740 tons into orbit but you are counting the weight of the remnants of the near empty lifter as well as the payload. I agree with you about the size of the VAB and the launch pad.

I'll double check the empty weight... I know it's over 700T

The lifter all depends on the 'shape' of your station. Even with the joint reinforcement squad put in in 23.5 i don't think you can single stack that sort of weight without it snapping into little twigs...

I wonder what the dead lift record is...

knock the video quality down to minimum... it'll use less bandwidth...

Personally, i pay a little bit extra for unlimited bandwidth... Last month i chewed 700GB over 28 days... and thats without doing any P2P downloading....

I like this heavy stuff!

Since you asked in your video, there was a video with a payload of 750 ton (coming from a previous KSP version) and the heaviest payload I know about so far is 2034 ton.

About the partcount: with the new parts, a payload-tons : lifter-partcount ratio > 3 can be achieved (see also my Lopac 52).

Personally I don't think the lifter part should count as the payload you have lifted into orbit otherwise the practical use for such a lifter is limited. If you did count the lifter itself then I think this would be a winner:

Well, "wins" is relative... Some people consider part-clipping to be a little cheaty. :)

WIP bigger launchpad, 200m wide, inside area "just" 60m wide (even bigger than both launchpads :) ) I just get to the limit with some big parts I'm working on, so I decide to create one.

I finally had some time to watch. Nicely done.

The rotation with asparagus/onion staging is pretty common, but there is a way to address that. I made a similar video, and addressed that in it. It's all about balancing your struts and fuel lines to make the rigidity balanced, to keep the boosters from slightly twisting on the radial decouplers.

Yes, that is very true. I suppose I could have put the engines on the side pods but it might have been a bit tight. Also, without part clipping everything ends up too similar to the old pancake design. Good video btw and good lifter!

And please don't take my comment as a criticism, it was just an observation. That's a pretty amazingly huge build you have there. What was the framerate like?

No offence taken. Criticise away! :) Honestly it wasn't a serious build, I had one of those pod rocket nacelle thingies already made for a small lifter design and multiplied it by twelve to see if I could even launch the thing. I can't remember what the framerate was but I think the physics slow down made the game run 1/20th of its normal speed. Basically a pointless design. :)

I did make a kilo ton lifter soon after the SLS update, my Peacemaker Lifter but again it uses that clipped engine cluster design which I can understand seems a tad realistic. It does allow for more variety in designs. The physics slow down on this one is acceptable.

My other lifter is the 500 ton to LKO, Pegasus lifter. I limited the part clipping to a more aesthetic engine cluster and it was good enough to make a decent looking asparagus lifter.

I might look at seeing if I can build a decent, usable lifter without part clipping, possibly using small side pods that extra engines could be added to while allowing more fuel tanks to be added vertically. I certainly think the 2000 ton payload to LKO is achievable.
