Radial inside mount

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'd like to have some sort of inside radial mount for payloads which don't fit the usual center-stack-model well.

I thought about using interstage fairings for shielding and to simply place a girder off-center. But I don't know how to fit the upper end to the girder to get it back straight in line. Or to put it in other words: how to connect the girder to whatever comes atop of the interstage fairing.

Since it is a bit difficult to explain, please see the following picture:

Are there best practises for that, is it a bad idea anyway or are there any mods who provide parts for that (I don't need a full cargo bay with doors etc, fairings would be enough)? I searched the forum but didn't find anything. However, iirc I've seen something like a half girder-cylinder with an attachment node on the inside a few days ago, but can't find it again.

Thanks!

Novapunch has some large structural parts that have multiple attachment nodes for creating engine clusters. You could possibly use those for what it seems you're trying to do there.

Those come in 3 5 and 7 attachment points. Do be aware to brace or connect the parts to the flipped over adaptor or this can happen in flight.

Thanks a lot for the ideas!

First things first: I think I found the mod I had in mind again :) Look at the arched structural frame with mount in the gallery if you like.

However, it's still a WIP so I'll try if it's ready yet and if not I'll take a look at the NovaPunch parts or build a C like Mipe suggested (which is wasting space a bit but should work fine at least).

I'll keep that unanswered for a few more minutes until I checked the mod and can report back.

Instead of girders, you might consider using I-beams and the small hub part - you can mount these by attach points, so you're guaranteed to return exactly to the center. You just may need to use struts to prevent wobbling because their connections are not very strong.

Struts are a given! Shame those beam and hub parts aren't available earlier in the tech tree... It's frustrating I can't use common construction elements but I can use advanced rocket engines and scientific equipment.

Common sense is a term not found in Kerbal dictionary.

I'd like to confirm that talisar's mod is working perfectly fine when standard sizes (3.75 & 2.5) are ok. It is even directly integrated with proc. fairings :D

For everything else it is a bit more complicated since the struts don't allow for variable sizes. I'd suggest to use the structural element from proc. parts instead of fixed length beams.

Thanks for the help, I'm satisfied :)
