So I was building my rocket to send my advanced unmanned rover to laythe, it was the first time I'd ever be entering laythes atmosphere.

Since I use Deadly Reentry, I decided to find a way to put heatshields on the bottom of my rover when it enters the atmosphere.

Then I go ahead and build the rest of my rocket to launch to laythe.

I arrive, but oh no! I messed up on my aerobrake and ended up going down over the water instead of land. And I jettisoned my engines!

I contact people on IRC asking what I should do.."RCS? Get out and push? edit quicksave file? Sacrifice a kerbal?".

Realizing that I couldn't do any of those (except edit the file, I didnt wanna cheat though), I thought my mission was done for.

Then god said "Halt! Do not jettison those heatshields! They can serve as a floation device."

So what do ya know?

Split second thinking saved the mission!

Science gathered in laythe waters.

So what are some of your extreme last-second-mission-successors-thingies?
