Duna colonization mission + satellite building from 1 trip ||| The Voltron program.

Recommended Posts

Full mission assembly.

9000 Delta-v fully fuelled.

8x 280kn nuclear engines with 805 isp. 4x Kerbodyne KR-2L at the center which will be used for a Laythe descent. (most likely for an other version of this though, need airbrakes and some chutes...)

The tip is the first part of my new Duna space station, I have also 8000 rocketparts of which I intend to build an additional station part which lets me dock my attached toys later on, which will be built with my extendable construction pad hidden inside the cargohold. Note my crazy fps in the topleft corner :(

Prolly like 700 parts here.. I crash on routine over here. Halp.

Spot the kerbal.

Voltron colony vessel at launchpad, has full mining equipment together with a smelter and workshop, capable of producing Rockertparts up to an 8k stockpile. Has an extendable orbital construction pad which is also used to create base hubs which then can be descended to the surface with a winch, after you land the Voltron. In this shot it misses 8x Sabre M Engines at each one of the smaller black tips at the sides, which is needed to obtain orbit with reasonable fuel to take you Minmus, and then refuel through some Kethane Extraction(that takes 400k exactly) if you're lucky, Minmus will have 1-2 deposits of that size!

The VTOL Van-über transport and kethane extraction vessel. Can be seen in the rear of the top pick. This vessel is the lifeblood of any spacestation it's assigned to. Later models will include interchangeable containers.

12k potential Kethane stockpile!

F5 Sparrow scouting(joyride) craft. Can be seen on the side of the top pic.

Crazy agility.

I crashed shortly afterwards.

I intend to assemble the station in low Duna orbit and construct its sister-part, then dock my 2 smaller ships to it to await mission directives! Then I shall with my last nickels construct a satellite capable of detecting ore desposits and potential landing sites, after this I will descend on Duna and begin base operations :)

Here's pic of it rotating slowly with the half the SAS modules only, won't either be using any RCS for vessel control here, don't want to risk anything swaying.

In the rear the van-über is attached with 6 struts, the satellite component at the tip has a whopping 16, the Sparrow at the right has 1 only since it's light, and a 4000 rocketpart container has 2 since it's slightly more unstable, also acts as a counterweight to the sparrow, both are around 10 tons each. At the large orange tanks there's a set of landing legs on each tank, which can swing down and deploy a total of 16 H50-A landing legs. It does good on Minmus, wonder how Duna will fare. Hope I don't break anything!

Totalled in now on 1455 tons of spacecraft. I'm now slightly aroused ಠ⌣ಠ

Jeb adds more struts before he and his 12 companions take off for the red rock!

The voyage begins....!

At 35% throttle... bloody struts are so weak :(

Will post more soon :)

Should I maybe specify this better?

Perhaps slipping-in a subtle mention would be useful, yes.

Some people go overboard and provide rules, scoring and all that other stuff in the Challenge Submission Guide as well. That is, if you are setting a challenge for other people. If you have just set yourself this challenge then this is, indeed, the wrong forum.

Figured the challenge of this was to colonize and build a Duna base by leaving Kerbin with 1 single ship, containing crew and vessels required to do so.

Should I maybe specify this better?

I can't see any challenge in that post. Only a craft demonstration. So looks like it is in the wrong forum. If you intended to make a challenge you better read the challenge submision guidelines and actually make a challenge.

How do I delete the post then? Do I request it from an admin?

One will be along, no doubt :-) You could report your own thread, asking for it to be moved. Mission Reports is probably the place for it, but they will know better.

Anyway, now we know you're just showing us what you've done - nice one!
