retrieving data from experiments?

Recommended Posts

So, it should be possible to EVA a kerbal next to a used goo can or other experiment part and extract the data, right?

I had a lander probe that was meant to land on the Mün and return, but it ran out of fuel after take off so I went out to retrieve the data... but when I EVA next to it and right click or left click the goo cans, nothing happens. I can operate the landing legs without a problem, but can't do anything to those experiments. Are there some conditions...?

First, Screenshots help.

Second, did you collect data with the goo canisters? That is to say, is there data in the canisters to collect?

Third, is the probe powered? That probably doesn't make a difference, I'm just thinking over variables to deal with.

Well it's a ship with some experiments. And an EVA'd Kerbal. Here's the screenie anyway.

Experiments are used. And there is still electricity on the probe. Can you reproduce this?

Make sure you are close enough. Also, you can't have transmitted the experiment earlier. If you did, then the data is gone. If it's a goo or SciJr, then you can't repeat. If it's another experiment, just do it again and you should be able to collect.

Kerbal was touching the experiment. I tried this maybe a dozen times. And I can retrieve data from experiments that are on the ship I EVA'd the kerbal from. Can you reproduce this? Or does it work for you?

Did I transmit? Well now you got me doubting myself. I'm pretty sure I didn't. How can I check that? Switch to that craft and try if I can still do anything to them I guess. But I just closed the game and I'm going to bed, I'll get back to this tomorrow.

edit - now this is embarrassing, looks like I must have transmitted afterall. Marking this as solved.

sometimes, touching is not enogh, kerbal has to hug the goo.

You can check it in the science facilty at KSC.

I've also experienced problems if the guy wasn't oriented quite right, or if he was touching the container in not quite "the right spot." I think for the SciJr's you need to be in front of the opening instead of on the side, but I can't recall at the moment.

Besides going back and sifting through the science logs, you can switch to the ship and right click on the module in question. When you switch to the craft and right click on the module, the menu should pop up. If it doesn't pop up, then you already transmitted. If you already transmitted and you EVA up to the module, right clicking will also not give a menu (but obviously that's your problem, so it doesn't confirm much for you).

EDIT: By the way, I don't think it matters if there's electricity or not. I'm pretty sure an EVA kerbal can still collect, even if the experiment is adrift by itself.
