Dragon v2 Challenge

Recommended Posts

Last Thursday night, SpaceX revealed its Dragon v2 capsule for transporting 7 people to and from the International Space Station

Some features of the v2: autonomous docking with ISS (no robot arm needed), 7 crew, lands on land propulsively.

For this challenge, your goal is to build a vehicle in Kerbal Space Program with similar design features as the Dragon v2. Launch it into orbit on a rocket of your choice (conventional 2-stage rocket might be nice, tho, this being a SpaceX challenge), have it dock autonomously with something, and return home to KSC with a propulsive landing.

Rules:

* no cheating

Scoring:

+10 per Kerbal up to 7

+100 demonstrated autonomous docking (using MechJeb, presumably, but kOS or whatever also fine) with a target of your choice previously placed in orbit

+50 land on land without use of parachutes

+50 no damage on landing

+20 land within 10km of KSC

+20 land on KSC grounds

+20 land within 100m of launch pad

+40 land on the launch pad (all cumulative)

-cost of payload in M$ (Elon Musk builds them cheap -- launch vehicle not included in cost)

-mass of vehicle in t

-part count

Leaderboards:

Stock (Non performance altering mods allowed even if they require parts; MechJeb and autopilots okay):

  1. 189 (-cost) MIcroMars
  2. ___
  3. ___

Balanced Mods (not considered balanced: KSP Interstellar, potentially others)

  1. ___
  2. ___
  3. ___

Here, have a dragon.

...

ohhhhhhh, you mean That Dragon. Like, the spacecraft.

Sorry. :D

Seriously, there are a great many people on the Spacecraft exchange that have really good Dragon replicas. You may want to PM some of them and ask whether they would be willing to partake in this.

Me, building a Dragon spacecraft is beyond my technical expertise. I made a MAVEN spacecraft once that really, really sucked. I'm not gonna try that anymore. :)

So as soon as I saw the presentation I wanted to build that ship. Actually I built it in my modded career save, before even seeing this challenge. there I landed on the runway, dunno if I got a pic, therefore not claiming P for that.

+70 for 7 Kerbals

+100 demonstrated autonomous docking

+50 land on land without use of parachutes

+50 no damage on landing

+ stock

-cost of payload in M$ ??

- 18 mass of vehicle in t

- 63 part count

= 189 P

Perhaps I'll post some better landings.
