Problem with saves

It happens all the time but now that my missions are more involved its really a problem.

I quick save..

time passes (maybe 30 mins of game play?)

something bad happens.

I reload

I am exactly the same place I was when the bad thing happened.

I am saving with F5. Then for reload I go out of game to main menu and re-enter.

what am I doing wrong?

When something bad happens hold down the F9 key and it will reload the game as of when you quicksaved with the F5 key. It is a good plan to F5 just before you think something may go wrong, such as when you are in orbit and are about to start a landing attempt.

The game autosaves fairly regularly , this us what us being reloaded when you exit to the main menu and reenter. However this is completely different from a quicksave.

If you leave the game and reenter, the game makes an autosave (when you leave), and loads that autosave (when you re enter).

To load a quicksave, hold F9
