Runway versus Launchpad?

Recommended Posts

I just started a new career, and unfortunately the first thing I remember doing was clicking the "Load" button to see what the default rockets are. But all I found in there were planes. I loaded a few and then I proceeded on with my career.

What this has done is set my green "Launch" button to always send my rockets to the runway instead of the launchpad. And I guess this also explains why all my rocket parts come in sideways (flipped 90 degrees) when I grab a new part. I always have to click the "W" key to rotate the part vertically before I do anything. The game thinks my rocket parts are plane parts, because I notice the plane parts were all flipped 90 degrees.

Bottom line... how do I make the game understand that I'm building rockets, not planes? Thanks for the help.

Are you in the spaceplane hanger? You want to click on the taller building, called the Vehicle Assembly Building (a link to an image of it) to build a rocket, rather than the shorter one (Called the Spaceplane Hanger).

Yes, that was the problem. I knew it was gonna be something pretty stupid of me. :) I dunno why the Spaceplane Hangar seemed normal, did they change this recently perhaps? I haven't played since December which basically explains my confusion... thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll be posting more questions, hopefully better ones!

No, it hasn't changed since December.

Clicking the runway = select a SPH vehicle and launch from runway. Clicking 'launch' in SPH = launch this vehicle from the runway.

Clicking the launch pad = select a VAB vehicle and launch from launch pad. Clicking 'launch' in VAB = launch this vehicle from the launch pad.

If you started building it in the SPH and transferred it to the VAB, it will revert to the SPH after launch. To change this, open the craft file [ saves/(Your Save)/ships/SPH or VAB/(ship name) ], and change the "type = SPH" to "type = VAB", or vice versa.

Hope that helps!

Explanation!

While you have access to the spaceplane hangar you won't actually be able to do much with it in Career mode until you unlock your tech tree in the Lab (the building on the bottom). You get science points by having your kerbals run experiments in their ships on on extra vehicular activity (EVA) which are used to unlock more parts to use.

The starting technology you have does not allow you to build space planes to launch off the runway. You lack wings and landing gear. You get wings by the time you unlock the second tier of the center branch in your tech tree. You get landing gear on the bottom branch by the 5th. Because of this (and a noticeable lack of types of landing gear) you'll rarely if ever use the Spaceplane hangar. It can be fun to play with though. Most of my laughs are at space planes spiraling off into destruction.

The use of the subassemblies tab in each builder allows you to transfer a ship between the VAB and the SPH or vice versa if you take the whole ship minus a starting part and put it in the subassemblies spot. This could help you with building a space shuttle like vehicle.

Enjoy!
