DLC ideas

Recommended Posts

To clear up some misunderstandings: Squad has no plans for any post-1.0 DLC's. The subject came a while ago and a lot of people got mad,so Squad announced that if, *IF* they ever made any expansions, those who purchased it before a date last year would have them included for no additional charge. But nothing of that sort is planned.

IIRC, the issue with DLC wasn't that they were considering adding paid content after launch. Individuals in the community got upset because SQUAD had stated individuals who pre-purchased KSP would receive "all future content" free of charge. Later they said this only meant updates, not post-release paid content (a la, DLC). Again, the issue that caused the upset wasn't that paid DLC could be released, but that it looked like SQUAD was welching on what they had promised earlier.

SQUAD used vague language and it bit them in booster. I hear they're getting that patched Soontm.

I think this was before I bought the game and joined the forums, so when I say "IIRC", it's based on articles I read in various locations.

Anyway.

IMO, the terms "DLC" and "Expansion" are practically synonymous at this point. Or, at worst, expansions are a subset of DLC (e.g. all expansions are DLC, but not all DLC are expansions). You can bicker about the differences all you want, but the term "expansion" has been getting used less and less since digital distribution has allowed companies to release smaller bits of content in a price effective way.

Regardless what SQUAD said about who's getting what for how much, I'd like to see DLC for KSP. I'm actually more concerned about statements like those above that indicate SQUAD has no plans for DLC. I understand that "no plans to release DLC for KSP after launch" is not synonymous with "no plans to support KSP after launch", but if SQUAD isn't charging for content produced after 1.0, I don't see what strong incentive they have to release content after 1.0. Some paid DLC for KSP would help keep the game fresh, and more importantly, supported in the long run.

Again, just because something could be done poorly does not mean that it should not be attempted. If someone presented a strong argument that KSP DLC could not possibly be done well, then I would agree. However, there's loadsof good DLC out there, even if there is also lots of crap (see Sims 3 DLC/expansions above). One of the things I like most about DLC is tends to be relatively inexpensive and a la cart. If SQUAD releases a kerbal reskin and you hate it, you don't have to pay for it, and it's not always bundled up with something you do want. As it stands, the game isn't that expensive, and while that may change at release, I doubt it any DLC would be outrageously priced.

Finally, the "mods can do it" argument against DLC is as horrible as it always is. Mods must be maintained by 3rd party authors that don't have full access to released code, and even less access (if any) to code in development. Yes, mods are great, but lag behind stock game development. This forces the part of the community that does play with mods to choose between either not enjoying the latest content because the mods aren't updated yet, or playing the new content without the mods they prefer. RT2 and B9 are prime examples of this gulf. Mods are good, but not an acceptable substitute for dev-administered code and stock features.

tl;dr, I support paid DLC. It will incentivize SQUAD to support KSP and improve the game experience for most or all players. And they'd be doing work, and therefore deserve compensation.

I especially support the idea for DLC if SQUAD remains hellbent on keeping certain features out of the core game, despite widespread community interest. You know what I'm talking about.

Squad. Make DLC? I don't buy it. Sorry, but I simply don't think they would do that-they said we will get updates for free and I think we will. If they release paid DLC, it will only massively anger maybe 90% of it's players (Most definately including me) due to the fact we would have to pay more for a game we thought we had bought. If they are thinking straight (And they seem to be thinking a lot more than many game-makers at the moment) they'll keep updating for free as usual.

Tbh this discussion is way too premature. We aren't even at the 0.25 milestone yet, which seems to indicate that there is still a long ways to go before we get to 1.0 and to possible future expansion packs.

Update .25 does not mean 25% done. It just means the 25th update to the game.

If there were a total of 26 updates required, it'd go from .25 to .26 to 1.0

Wow you really have not paid any attention to the discussions have you?

All PRE RELEASE updates are free. Post release expantions will NOT be (unless you bought the game before may 2013 I believe)

Sorry, but you are the one not paying attention:

Please read the above sentence again.

Ok now one more time.

How is that relevant. The discussion pertains to if Squad does release DLC or expansions. If they have plans to or not is irrelevant.

Because if they do not plan to release DLC's how can then an discussion about DLC's make sense in first place?

Correct me if i am wrong, so far i understood there is no possibility at all for an DLC in their minds.

It's like discussing something that does not exist and never will.

Bringing that matter up is like pouring gasoline into a flame.

The devs didn't originally plan to include multiplayer, either, but changed their minds (unless you believe it when they claimed multiplayer was always planned...). It's conceivable that the devs could change their minds about DLC as well.

The thread started out touchy, and is going downhill real fast. If this keeps up, mods will be locking the thread.

I have currently spent nearly 70 hrs of game play in Kerbal Space Program. In my view, I have definitely gotten my money worth. I would be happy to spend money on DLC or expansions, to support Squad, if it would allow me to continue to enjoy the game and keep things interesting and fresh with new content.
