Getting Science On Kerban

Great game so far. Getting quite addicted.

But I have to ask....

It doesn't make sense to fly a rocket all over Kerban and land to collect science from different biomes. If I lived at the Cape and I needed soil samples from Denver I would use roads right?

Is there a back story I am missing or is it just a "thing" that is in the game to give you some Kerban bound missions?

You can drive if you really want to...

But basically science on Kerbin is there so you do not have to make a whole mission to the mun or minmus if you lack 10 points to research the node you need to get your next rocket to duna or something like that. If you really want to collect all Kerbin biomes without rockets for OCD reasons you can use a plane also.
