Deep Impact!

Recommended Posts

I am a huge fan of the deep impact mission done in 2005. So this challenge will be to recreate that mission.

Criteria

I do not necessarily need a replica of the ship. (It would be nice if you could.)

You must do this to a class A asteroid as we do not yet have comets and it cannot be moved or edited prior to the challenge.

The ranking will be the speed of impact, so the higher the speed the higher your rank!

I need a picture (as well timed as possible) or video of the impact.

I will accept modded craft but no engine max thrust modifications!

Rankings

1. TJPrime 20 m/s

2.

3.

4.

5.

Hm, well - maybe you should revise your challenge.

You know - not everybody knows what the Deep Impact mission was, so write down what exactly you want to see. Try reading the Challenge Submission Guide, it has some good tips.

Just try to look at your submission objectively: It's not very engaging, isn't it? People might spend several hours on a challenge like this, while it look like you wrote this challenge on a whim. Elaborate what people are supposed to do, maybe find a nice picture. Take a look at the Constellation Space Program Challenge - you can clearly see that Death Engineering worked the whole thing out.

A submission by yourself is allways adviseable, so people know it's do-able.

Also don't be impatient - bumping your own thread won't help.

I'll answer that here for now:

The deep impact mission in 2005 was where NASA sent a probe towards a comet. It had two parts:

- An observation probe

- An impact probe

The observation probe watched the impact probe slam into the comet at many km/s. It analysed the impact to see what the inside of a comet is made of. It was partly successful - It did image the impact, but a dust cloud prevented any detailed images of the impact itself.

Basically, this challenge is asking you to take one probe with some sort of impactor to hit the smallest type of asteroid possible - a Class-A asteroid.

Also, This is where my submission will be posted:

(insert image of impactor here)

UPDATE: I just tested it. It is very hard to come within 100km. I eventually gave up with that one and cheated (hyperedited) to get a rendezvous of 20m/s. My observing craft was in the explosions (it didn't blow up, but I took a dramatic shot)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
