[RSS] To The Moon And Back - RSS Manned Lunar Program Challenge

Recommended Posts

It looks perfect! Yeah, that is definitely for the "A Science Lab In SPAAAAAACE!!!!" achievement, also, sadly I didn't try finishing my thing today. :( My day was spent watching Apollo 13, watching YouTube, Forum posts, Playing Orbiter, Trying KSP 0.24.2 for the first time, and trying KSP mods. I only remembered the RSS Moon thing now. Ugh.

Finally. Although there is no achievement for this, I'll put here my film about expedition to Saturn

Wow that's amazing! Crewed mission to all 3 of Saturn's moons with life support and deadly reentry... What was the total time for the crew on the mission? Have you been to the other planets/moons yet? The Saturn system is probably the second hardest after Jupiter.

Total mission time was 10 years, with about 200 days on each moon. And till now I've made: Moon landing, Venus flyby, Mars landing, landing on Callisto, Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus probe voyage, Moon base, and now I'm looking towards unmanned Triton sample return.

I take it you did not do this in full RO just RSS?

That's right, just RSS, FAR, TAC LS, DR. I think with stock parts its actually more difficult :)

We will agree to disagree on that. I am actually mostly impressed you got that layered brick to even fly, and not fly apart. And is that the RSS 1:1 real system or the RSS real solar system Kerbal scale?

It's the 1:1 RSS, you can tell by the burn delta-v values. Otherwise it wouldn't be nearly as impressive. And stock parts is definitely harder than RO with Real Fuels, since the stock engines have much lower TWR than real engines, and the stock fuel tanks have much lower mass ratios than real fuel tanks.

...That get's a new achievement/mini-challenge, so perfect job!!!!!!!

I thought it would be "lord of the rings" achievement :P

Of course it's 1:1 RSS. Propably best thing that's left from my 'space program' is that square launch vehicle. I know it looks rather like a building but it has an advantage of fairly low part count and high reliability - none of them ever fell apart during launch. It can also be uprated for further increase of payload.

On the other hand, throttle control: I might kill someone to have that. :)

Movies are overrated, get the books :)

While nowhere near as impressive as von Ziegendorf's missions are, I believe there is nonetheless an achievement for this:

Javascript is disabled. View full album

(gonna bring them back and update the gallery tomorrow)

On a side note, you might want to take a closer look at the scoreboard, as it seems you've get a few things mixed up there - I don't recall ever bringing a rover to the moon in RSS ;)

I never used that part of Realism Overhaul. I think it's overkill. In real life, computers can shut down an engine accurately to a fraction of a second, and trajectories are also calculated by computer. Since you don't really have that luxury in KSP (even MechJeb isn't precise enough), by not being able to fine-tune burns you're making it harder than in reality.

I'm fine with the way it is. IF someone manages to do a landing and return, then I guess it will merit it's own achievement, but I don't think it is possible (even if we ignore the fact that your vessel should automatically be destroyed once it reaches ground level). I would love to be proven wrong though.

Forgot to reply :( But I don't remember where I found those screenshots. Instead of it, I'll give you a starter before the main course.

Who can guess where am I going to?

Not the Moon. o_o

Could you link us these screenshots?

Did you see his videos?

I've seen. Maccollo and DonLorenzo inspired me to play RSS with stock parts. But they only got themselves to Mars (so far). Here is where I've been. Modlist remained unchanged since last time.

The first RSS mission conducted without calculated flightplan and extensively tested vehicles. I used experience from Inspiration Kerbal so I could spontaneously plan flybys and the whole trajectory.

I'm making a second attempt, this time Apollo style :]

Ran some test fly-by missions, removed the soup by installing FAR, and made a more properly staged rocket.

Still need to test the transfer stage and lunar module. If it works as well as intended, a rover will be added and maybe some stock fairings.
