Outed as a geek...

So I'm standing in the middle of the Riverside, IA Star Trek museum ("The future birthplace of Capt. James T. Kirk!" ®) musing over the absurdity of the whole "trekkie" thing and suddenly I hear a beeping noise and a familiar voice. "Sir, we have an incoming transmission." And yeah, it's Lt. Uhura. And yeah, everybody can hear it. And yeah, it's coming from my phone...

Aaand the lady behind the counter is grinning at me...

I couldn't even begin to explain that I was only there because I thought it'd be fun to gawk at the trekkies and I just had the ringtone because it was funny. The damage had been done... :D

*snrk*I guess nobody warned you that Karma exists in the 23rd Century. :sticktongue:

Slightly more serious though... is it just my imagination or am I right on this: In spite of how much more widely-accepted nerddom is now, and the explosion of the Cosplay culture, are Trekkies STILL that looked down on?

I like how you're implying that you aren't in fact a geek. On an internet forum dedicated to a video game about little green men flying rockets...

Oh, I'm definitely a nerd. I love the math/ science/ engineering and Jeb is hilarious. I'm just not the kind of nerd who would dress up like a Kerbal, learn to speak Kerbin, or get into details about trivia or which aspects of Kerbin history are "canon".

Not looking down on people who are into that sort of thing, but it's just not me and in that moment it appeared like I was.

Maybe it's been too long since I've been in any IRL nerdy social circles, but last time I checked, one didn't have to dress as a Jedi and speak Hutt in order to get into a plastic light saber fight. I rather doubt a ringtone qualifies as extreme fandom either. But... yeah, if you were on a bridge replica when it happened, that's funny no matter which way you slice it.
